Behind the stories in The Fraser Canyon Express

The little things in life

I was talking with a friend on the phone the other night, (not something I do often but I couldn’t sleep.. and it was a compelling conversation at 3am) We were talking about how some people are unable to enjoy life because they are always waiting for the “big” things to happen.   We all know people like this, they aren’t happy in school because they can’t wait until they are out on their own.  Then, they can’t enjoy their first apartment because it is “only temporary until I can find something better”. Likewise their first love; “he may not be Mr. Right, but he’s Mr. Right Now.  Even marriage and children don’t deliver the “happiness” they’ve been waiting for, because they are always looking for a bigger house, a better job, a nicer car, more money, etc.   Somewhere along the line they were told that they would one day be “happy” and that’s it, they would have arrived at their goal.  They actively seek it their entire lives and never find it- never realizing that they can have it right now, right here in this moment if they just look at their lives through different eyes.  Not with expectation but with realization that joy and happiness exist in the little things around us.  A lung full of fresh air first thing in the morning, a long cool drink of ice water when you’re hot and thirsty.  Happiness is not a destination, it is the journey, and I plan to take the scenic route to see as much as I can!
